VMZINC compatibility with other construction materials

Avoid all direct contact with fresh concrete, lime, asphalt, mortar and all supports and other construction materials capable of containing substances harmful to VMZINC.

  • Zinc in relation with timber

A low or non-acid solid, natural and non treated timber deck, that is, with a pH of between 5 and 7 is compatible with zinc and can be used as a direct support.

Compatible timber Incompatible timber

Scots pine Chestnut
Poplar Red cedar
  Douglas fir
  White cedar
  Plywood - see VMZINC PLUS

  • Zinc in relation with other metals

Contact between zinc and other metals must take into account the electro-chemical reactions caused by a difference in electrical potential between the surfaces of the metals. Therefore a certain number of contacts are acceptable whilst others must be avoided.

Various metals can be classified in accordance with their reactivity potentials, relative to the normal hydrogen electrode.

If two metals are in contact, the metal with the higher potential in the electrochemical ranking decomposes the metal with the lower potential and, by accelerating corrosion, destroys it after a certain time.

In practical terms, a certain number of bimetal contacts are acceptable while others must be avoided. This is particularly important when installing lightning protection. In addition, water must never be allowed to run from a higher potential metal to a lower one: the water can contain charged ions which would accelerate the removal rate of the weaker metal.
